Points of Interest: Westward Ho! to Clovelly

Here’s what to look out for along the way:

Westward Ho!

A seaside village named after a novel, backed by the Pebble Ridge and known for its surfing beach.

Kipling’s Poem

Lines from Rudyard Kipling’s “If” are inscribed along the seafront—a tribute to the author who spent time here as a boy.

Seafield House

Locally known as the “Haunted House,” this striking building overlooks the sea and marks the edge of the village.

Abbotsham Cliffs

Rugged sandstone cliffs with sweeping ocean views and visible geological strata dating back 400 million years.

Peppercombe

A steep combe with a hidden coach house, wooded valley paths, and a dramatic climb out.

Worthygate Wood

A shaded woodland trail connecting Peppercombe to the descent into Bucks Mills.

Bucks Mills

A quiet historic village with cob cottages, a heritage centre, and a beach with a waterfall if time allows.

Hobby Drive

A scenic track winding through woodland and combes toward Clovelly, with occasional sea views and plenty of pheasants.

Clovelly

A famous car-free fishing village with cobbled streets, harbour views, terraced gardens, and a strong maritime legacy.

Alternative: The Stagecoach bus service 319 runs from the Clovelly Visitors’ Centre to Bideford, and then the 21 continues on to Westward Ho!. You can catch the bus at either 7:25 am or 10:30 am, with the journey taking just over an hour.
