Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace, recognized as the world’s first computer programmer, was the daughter of poet Lord Byron and mathematician Annabella Milbanke. She spent her summers at Ashley Combe above Porlock Weir, where she and her husband, William, transformed Culbone Woods into one of the first significant arboretums in South West England and created drives leading to St Beuno’s Church. Despite her early death, her collaboration with Charles Babbage on the “Analytical Engine” profoundly influenced computing; she authored the first published algorithm and envisioned computers processing not just numbers but also music, images, and text. During her time at Ashley Combe, she often sought inspiration for her mathematical work while walking through the woods with Babbage.
