The White Rabbit of Port Gaverne

The quiet, deep inlet just east of Port Isaac.

The Story: Before it was a quiet swimming spot, Port Gaverne was a hub for landing illicit brandy and lace. To keep the superstitious locals and prying eyes away from the “landing zones” at night, smugglers would spread rumors of a spectral White Rabbit that haunted the cellars and cliffs—an omen of death to anyone who crossed its path.

The Echo: Even now, a sudden flash of white in the gorse—usually a real rabbit or a seabird—can jumpstart the heart of a solitary walker. It’s a reminder of how the smugglers used the landscape’s own mysteries as a weapon of psychological warfare.
